Understanding and Preventing Phishing Scams Phishing is a type of cybercrime in which criminals use fraudulent emails, text messages, or websites to trick individuals into revealing sensitive information such as passwords, credit card numbers, or social security numbers.
To prevent falling victim to a phishing scam, it is important to be aware of the following:

  1. Be wary of unsolicited emails or messages, especially those that ask for personal information. Legitimate companies will not ask for this information through email or text message.
  2. Do not click on links or download attachments from unknown sources.
  3. Be suspicious of emails or messages that create a sense of urgency or threaten dire consequences.
  4. Check the sender’s email address, phone number, and website address for authenticity.
  5. Use anti-virus and anti-malware software to protect your devices from phishing attacks.
  6. Use two-factor authentication for email and other important accounts.
  7. Educate yourself about the common types of phishing scams, such as the “Nigerian Prince” scam, the “Your account will be closed” scam, and the “Invoice” scam.
  8. Use the built-in phishing filters in your email client or browser.
  9. Never give personal information over the phone unless you initiated the call and you trust the person you are talking to.

If you suspect you have fallen victim to a phishing scam, contact the relevant authorities, change your passwords, and monitor your financial accounts for suspicious activity.
